Next Big Thing in Photography

Posted by KSD Designs on Sunday, June 26, 2011, In : Photography
Lytro.com is a early stage startup offering one of the biggest breakthroughs in photography: shoot first, focus later. The technology uses a "light field camera" that has a special sensor designed to capture additional data on each photo. This means you can get much more out of one photo. With one click, a blurred background can become the center focus of a picture.

Desert Motion

Posted by KSD Designs on Monday, February 7, 2011, In : Photography

Watch this "Desert Motion" video and you'll never guess that it was created from still images. The photographer took still images over Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Arizona and Arches National Park in Utah and manipulated them using Photoshop CS5 and Apple Motion to create what looks like a soaring nature video. Superb and creative.

"Space Project" Photography by Vincent Fournier

Vincent Fournier wins for having the coolest photoshoot. The "Space Project" focuses on otherworldly art exploration with images depicting space. The images are of some of the most significant space complexes from the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah to The Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Russia photographing people in real space gear as if they were on Mars.

It goes to show that you don't have to travel all the way to Mars for a st...

Artistic Blur

Posted by Kristen Schoeck on Thursday, October 7, 2010, In : Photography

Depending on your artistic vision, photo blurring can be a blessing or a curse. You may actually want your
photos to be "artistically blurred". In the recent ad campaigns for W MagazineAlexander McQueen and Giorgio Armani, the photos were intentionally blurred to create a soft illusion. It is a great way for photographers to break away from the clutter of crisp and sharpened photography that we've been used to seeing.

No Tripods Necessary

Posted by Kristen Schoeck on Thursday, October 7, 2010, In : Photography
  • When it comes to photography, low light can cause blurring. This is because the shutter is opened for a longer period of time to let more light in, and meanwhile your camera or your subject could move.

  • In times like these, you might think you need a
tripod. But what if you don't have one? Instead, you could try the "Joe McNally" grip. Joe McNally is a photographer for National Geographic and Sports Illustrated and came up with a helpful way to hold your camera to mimic the effectiveness of a ...

Fashion photographer, Steven Meisel, recently exhibited a collection of 3D photographs for Italian Vogue magazine called "Scents of the Future". As its title suggests, the images are multi sensory with each photo scented with floral fragrances and displayed in 3D. The photos are featured in the September issue of the magazine, which includes a pair of 3D glasses which you'll need to view the images in their entirety.

    LA Without Cars?

Running on Empty from Ross Ching on Vimeo.

What do you get when you mix still photos from a DSLR + Photoshop + Adobe After Effects? Running on Empty.

This film was created by Ross Ching and inspired by the photography of Matt Logue "Empty LA".

As someone who favors the environment, I have always wondered what the world would be like without cars. This video shows just how eerie and peaceful it would be at the same time. No more sirens, no more rush-hour traffic all day traffic, no more CO...

    Which Camera Should I Use?

Posted by Kristen Schoeck on Sunday, April 11, 2010, In : Photography

People always ask me which digital camera to buy. Nikons to Olympus, Pixels and Zooms- it can be hard to narrow it down. Here's how you do it:

    1. Figure out what you will be photographing.
Is it something you'll need a long lens for, like sports? Is it travel photography?- in which case you may need a portable point and shoot. Or is it professional photography? - in which you should try a DSLR. Having a criteria in mind will help you find the best camera for you.

    2. Take advantage of the online...

    Pixelated Images become Art

Posted by Kristen on Friday, February 5, 2010, In : Photography

Most photographers are taught to throw out a pixelated image because it's considered too blurry.

But not Jörg Colberg. He uses the pixelation to add a geometric element to his photos in his latest project "American Pixels". The detail is left on the subject and the rest of the image is compressed based on an algorithm.

    The results look pretty cool:

Getting To Know A Few Photographers

Posted by Kristen on Sunday, October 25, 2009, In : Photography
The following noteworthy photographers all depict the common theme of city life, which is one of my photographic inspirations. Since cities draw all walks of life, there are endless opportunities for a great photo. These photographers show city life in a truthful way. I especially like how they depict everyday and otherwise mundane settings and turn it into intriguing and photo-journalistic art.

    Enjoy.

    Capturing the City

Posted by Kristen on Wednesday, September 2, 2009, In : Photography
One of my main themes throughout my artwork and photography is cities. And what better city to photograph than one of America's most iconic, New York City.

I recently viewed an exhibit of 12 photos chronicling Manhattan. Each photo not only shows off New York City's optimism, hardworking spirit, and power but also it's depth. Some of the pieces show the city in black and white with immigrants arriving and making the city their own. Others show a modern New York, highlighting the commercializat...
