Painting with Light

Posted by KSD Designs on Monday, July 11, 2011, In : Photography
What do you get when you mix one fast car, an empty parking lot, and long exposure cameras? A light painting!

The
VW Canadian "Driving Can Be Beautiful" ad campaign was created entirely from the light of the car's headlights. Using the long exposure camera technique and beam splittering, the car was able to "paint" the logo of the VW from the light trails that glow against the dark parking lot. The result looks much like the BMW Z4 campaign, and proves once again that you don't need a pai...

Art in Action

Who says you need a paintbrush to create art?

For the BMW Z4 commercial, the campaign used the wheels of the car to create art in a mini movie: An Expression of Joy.

Watch the video to see the car create a giant work of art:

Behind the Scenes: Making of a Masterpiece.

Ad Placement

Posted by KSD Designs on Friday, March 18, 2011, In : Advertising
Possibly the worst ad placement ever. View it here

It began as a 30 second pre-roll video for Geico. Then during the entire video of the Japan Tsunami,
the Gieco ad remains at the top of the page while you watch cars, people, and homes being destroyed
from the Tsunami. It goes to show that contextual ad placements are not always appropriate. The
comments on this video agree: it is jarring to place a car insurance campaign (or any ad for that matter)
next to with these tragic events.

And it's...

Advertising Precision

Posted by KSD Designs on Saturday, January 15, 2011, In : Advertising

Can cars play the drums?

Apparently, they can- with a little help from mathematics. Lexus' ad campaign "Music Track" wanted to convey the car's "precision handling" by driving over each beat of a drum so precisely, it created a tune.

In order to convey this kind of precision, they needed to hire a mathematician to develop a method for the car to perfectly hit each note. LMU math professor Bennett designed an equation to determine how far apart to place the sensors to conduct the "beat". Check ...

Designing Excellence

Tired of the same old car ads? You know, the ones with the loud music, flashy photography, and claims of having the coolest cars?

Well, check out Subaru's campaign "Designing Mediocrity" which basically takes a reverse thinking approach to their marketing strategy. The ads poke fun at all the stereotypes of typical car ads. Check out the campaign here:

LA Without Cars?

Running on Empty from Ross Ching on Vimeo.

What do you get when you mix still photos from a DSLR + Photoshop + Adobe After Effects? Running on Empty.

This film was created by Ross Ching and inspired by the photography of Matt Logue "Empty LA".

As someone who favors the environment, I have always wondered what the world would be like without cars. This video shows just how eerie and peaceful it would be at the same time. No more sirens, no more rush-hour traffic all day traffic, no more CO...

Best Use of Music in Ads (Top 9)

Posted by Kristen on Thursday, February 11, 2010, In : Advertising
Sometimes music can be the glue that makes a commercial stick in your mind. From car  to drink ads, music is a popular feature in many commercials. What's interesting is that these commercials hardly showcase top 40 hits. Instead they choose more obscure "hip" bands whose songs may not have become well known (yet). That is why when you hear the song, you primarily associate it with the commercial and think of the ad. And since music is catchy, it enables these ads to be remembered many years ...
