Population Change Infographic

Posted by KSD Designs on Saturday, April 9, 2011, In : Infographics

I recently stumbled upon an interesting infographic by DataPointed which depicts the population changes
in major US cities between the 2000 and 2010 Census data. Some cities saw major growth, while others
 experienced an influx in emigration, for example Detroit and New Orleans. The shifts in population and
demographics are likely to cause changes in targeting strategies for marketers.

See if you can guess the city below: (scroll down for the answer)

KEY
Blue= population doubled (or more)
Red=...

Posted by Kristen Schoeck on Thursday, December 23, 2010, In : Infographics
Just how segregated is your city? View these genius Flickr infographics to see. Using geodata from the Census 2000, they depict the demographics of just about every American city.

KEY
Red is White,
Blue is Black,
Green is Asian,
Orange is Hispanic,
Gray is Other, and each dot is 25 people.

I'd love to see an updated version of this using the recently released 2010 Census data to see how things have changed.

Something about these infographics remind me of the Netflix movie rentals by demographic ...

Wear Today is a blog that has me particularly amused.

Ed Kim of Google Creative Labs has documented in a blog what he wears each day. From a design perspective, it's lovely. I especially love the snorkel gear.

Follow what he's wearing today:

Locals VS Tourists

Posted by Kristen Schoeck on Wednesday, December 22, 2010, In : Infographics

In possibly one of the coolest infographics of all time, you can view cities based on locals vs tourist spots. Using geotagged photos, the maps were created to distinguish tourist's pictures from local's. It's particularly useful in finding off-the-beaten-path places to visit.

Here's a detail view of New York City:

RED= Tourist photos were taken
BLUE= Local photos were taken
YELLOW= Where they both overlap

Posted by Kristen Schoeck on Tuesday, December 14, 2010, In : Infographics

Ever find yourself buying something without much rhyme or reason?

Turns out that reason is marketing, branding, and packaging techniques that influence purchasing habits. One of the main ways is by using color and other visual techniques. Check out how color can affect your purchases in this infographic (via @Good):

Key Findings:

  • Visual appearance and color are key reasons for why customers choose a product.
  • Color increases brand recognition
  • Red and Blue attract impulse buyers- which may be why t...

Education Reform Infographic

Posted by Kristen Schoeck on Monday, September 20, 2010, In : Infographics
There's nothing like a well designed infographic video to really get a message across.
This brief video is about a documentary called "Waiting for Superman". The film focuses on education reform. It shows how education is the key foundation to solving many of the world's problems, but a system that has been failing students in America. Here's one of the possible reasons

Infographics Overload

Posted by Kristen Schoeck on Thursday, March 4, 2010, In : Infographics
I love infographics. Maybe it's because I am a visual learner. Or because I am fond of graphic design, OR maybe it's because I prefer to scan a page than actually read it. Whatever the reason, watch this TED talk where Gary Flake demos Pivot, a new way to browse and arrange massive amounts of images and data online. I just downloaded it, and it's awesome.

How different are we from zip code to zip code? Extremely, according to Netflix's infographics on the most popular movie rental titles featured in an article in the NY Times.

View the maps of LA and DC below and watch how dramatically our movie tastes change depending on the zip code. Hopefully this can give you some insight into each area's tastes which can be applied to your business and advertising strategy.
